Winter Weather Awareness Week: Day 1 – Winter Storms
As we kick off Winter Weather Awareness Week (Nov. 17–21), today’s focus is on Winter Storms — understanding the different alerts issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) and where to find reliable, local weather information.
Knowing the difference between an Outlook, Watch, Advisory, and Warning can help you take timely action to stay safe during Minnesota’s harsh winter weather.
What Each Alert Means
-
Winter Weather Outlook:
A storm may develop in the next 3–7 days. Start planning and check your supplies. -
Winter Storm Watch:
Severe winter weather (heavy snow, sleet, or ice) is possible within 12–48 hours. Prepare to adjust travel and daily plans. -
Winter Weather Advisory:
Winter conditions are expected but not severe enough for a warning. Roads may become slippery; use caution. -
Winter Storm Warning:
Dangerous winter weather is occurring or imminent. Take immediate action to protect yourself and avoid unnecessary travel.
