Winter Weather Awareness Week: Day 5 – Winter Driving Safety

As we close out Winter Weather Awareness Week, today’s focus is Winter Driving Safety — one of the most important topics for Minnesota residents.

Whether commuting to work or traveling for the holidays, winter road conditions can change quickly.

🚗 Before You Hit the Road

  • Check road conditions at 511mn.org or the MN 511 mobile app.

  • Keep the gas tank at least half full.

  • Make sure wiper fluid is winter-rated.

  • Clear snow from ALL windows, mirrors, and lights.

🧰 Winter Vehicle Emergency Kit

  • Blanket or sleeping bag

  • Shovel

  • Sand or traction grit

  • Jumper cables

  • Flashlight

  • Phone charger

  • Snacks & water

  • Ice scraper/brush

🛑 Safe Winter Driving Habits

  • Slow down and increase following distance.

  • Never crowd the plow — give snowplows room to work.

  • If you slide off the road: stay with your vehicle and call for help.
