Substance Use Disorders

The first step in receiving treatment for a substance use disorder is to complete a Comprehensive Use Assessment. You may choose any licensed treatment provider to conduct this assessment. The agency you select will assist you in exploring funding options for both the assessment and ongoing treatment services. These costs may be covered by your health insurance, including Medical Assistance (MA), or through the Behavioral Health Fund.

To qualify for the Behavioral Health Fund, you need to be:

  • A Minnesota resident (Must apply in the county where you live)
  • Do not have health insurance that covers chemical dependency treatment services.
  • Meet the Minnesota BHF eligibility guidelines (PDF) for income and household size.

Completed Behavioral Health Fund applications can be faxed to 320-732-4541 Attention: Jake.

Behavioral Health Fund is a funding source of last resort and other options for payment must first be explored.

We maintain resource lists for private providers in the area who can complete these assessments. This is not an all-encompassing list and there are many other treatment providers you can access.  We are not endorsing any of these providers in specific, only listing these as a basis for those looking into services to have additional resources.
